Hurricane Rita Blows Past 457
Licensed Child Care Providers in Texas, Louisiana; Thousands of
Slots Are Likely Damaged or Lost
SEPT. 26, 2005 | Hurricane Rita struck the Texas-Louisiana area
of the Gulf Coast Sept. 23, potentially damaging or destroying
up to 457 licensed child care facilities that provided early
care and education for up to 34,941 young children.
The Federal
Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) declared a disaster
area encompassing five parishes in Louisiana and eight counties
in Texas.
The Rural Early Childhood Atlas,
a joint project of Rural Early Childhood and the Rural Policy
Research Institute, plotted and counted child care facilities in
the disaster area using data from the Texas Department of Family
and Protective Services, the Louisiana Department of Social
Services, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration,
and FEMA.
State and federal agencies may be able to add administrative and
child wellbeing datasets to the Rural Early Childhood Atlas.
