AUG. 14, 2004 | The Center for Family Policy and Research of the
University of Missouri is a new partner of the National Center for
Rural Early Childhood Learning Initiatives.
The two centers will collaborate on research projects concerning
child care quality and other issues affecting young children and
families in rural America.
Kathy Thornburg, Ph.D., is professor of human development and family
studies at the University of Missouri and director of the Center for
Family Policy and Research. She and Cathy Grace, Ed.D., director of
the NCRECLI, met earlier this month to discuss initial projects.
"Early childhood educators in rural America have long known that
more policy
attention was needed to the special needs of young children and
their
families in rural communities,” Thornburg said. “We are delighted
that Mississippi State University has undertaken to bring together
this overdue synthesis of policy
and practice ideas."
Grace commented, “I am very pleased that we will be able to work
with the researchers of the Center for Family Policy and Research.
This group has done outstanding work in fostering improved quality
and continuous professional development for early childhood teachers
and directors. In addition, Kathy Thornburg has been a leader in
focusing early childhood education services research on the distinct
needs of rural young children.”
The Center for Family Policy and Research conducts numerous research
projects on quality of child care and early childhood education,
focusing on the needs of low-income and rural families. Thornburg is
a past president of the National Association for the Education of
Young Children.
